A New Car!

A Major Award! (Fragile, it Must be from Italy!)

I won a prize this weekend. One that I didn't even think I would win. I took literally 4 dollars in coins out of my pocket and bought raffle tickets. I thought, hey- why not? I wrote my name on them and tore them up and handled them over.

I was at the Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild conference this weekend. They had Ross Conrad speaking about Natural Beekeeping. I have always wanted to keep bees. I read about bee keeping the way others read about gardening. I call myself an armchair beekeeper. I have never lived someplace I could put a hive (rentals frown on that) and all the relatives I have implored have thought me daft. But I got to listen to Ross Conrad talk about beekeeping and I was happy as a clam.

At the end of his all day discussion (but before the showed the movie) they pulled the raffle and I won the Grand Prize! I won a Brand New Hive! A serious investment for a new beekeeper, this is a 5 medium super hive with all the trimmings. I was beyond shocked. I didn't even stay for the movie I wanted to see. I put it in the car. I let Sue know I was coming home with something she might be surprised about. (Thankfully, I have the best wife possible. Her reponse was: Congrats, Lucky Lady.)

 

Now I need to buy bees!

Do you have access to your roof? That would be a possible place for the bees that wouldn't take up space at ground level [and be less obvious to neighbors]. Suggestion comes from my enviro-sci colleague, who wishes you all the best with the bees!
